HKIE Outstanding Paper Award 2007

An international paper award with an ultimate goal to provide a platform for local and overseas young engineers and researchers to share and exhibit their accomplishments in various engineering fields.

Basically, this award aims to encourage young engineers and researchers to publish their works and develop in their professional fields and to promote engineering advancement among the younger generation

Chapman Oration

Over 650 attendees flocked to the 46th Chapman Oration black tie dinner held at Crown Palladium on Thursday 24th August and were treated to an unforgettable night. Dr Andy Thomas, Australian astronaut held the captivated audience during his address; describing and showing videos of his time of training, taking off, in space, on space station Mir and the flight after the tragic Discovery shuttle discovery.

The night also marked the awarding of the VicRoads Young Engineer of the year, which had received a record number of entries, a tribute to the inspiring and talented young engineers we currently have in this state. The professional award was won by Mr. Jon McNaught from GHD in Mildura with highly commended going to Ms Bianca Thimm, also from GHD. the 2006 Young Engineering Associate Award was won by Mr. Husnen Rupani, with highly commended won by Mr. Andrew Pearce. YEA-V would like to congratulate all winners and wish them luck with their careers.

Another memorable evening run by Engineers Australia with great food, wine, an amazing speech and a terrific opportunity to network with leaders of industry.

Rod McGee Medal

Engineers Australia invites applications for the Rod McGee Medal 2006. The Medal recognises and encourages civil engineering students to engage in career opportunities in public works engineering. The prize includes an engraved medallion and a $2,000 cheque.

2006 Victoria Prize and Fellowships (Nominations close 10th April, 06)

Nominations are open for the 2006 Victoria Prize for excellence in science, technology or engineering and applications are open for overseas study grants to early career scientists, engineers or innovators.

Victoria Prize

Each year, the Victorian Government awards the prestigious $50,000 Victoria Prize to an individual whose groundbreaking discovery or innovation has advanced knowledge, and has produced or may produce a commercial outcome or other benefits to the community.

The Victoria Prize celebrates leadership, determination and creativity and highlights the many ways in which research and development of international significance is conducted locally.

The Anne and Eric Smorgan Memorial Award

The $100,000 Anne and Eric Smorgan Memorial Award is awarded by the Jack and Robert Families Foundation to the research institute supporting the Victoria Prize recipient.

Victoria Fellowships

Each year, the Victorian Government awards up to six $18,000 Victoria Fellowships to enable early career researchers and innovators to travel overseas to pursue specialist training, develop a commercial idea, expand international networks or gain recognition for their work.

Applications are open to early career researchers working in private enterprise or a research institution.

Winners of the Victoria Fellowships will be eligible to apply for $5,000 AFAS FEAST-France Fellowships to undertake study missions to France. These Fellowships are offered by the Australian French Association for Science and Technology (Victoria) and the Embassy of France.

National Women in Engineering Committee (Engineers Australia) Scholarship

The National Women in Engineering Committee of Engineers Australia provides an annual scholarship to attend the International Institute of Women in Engineering (EPF Ecole d'Ingenieurs) Conference in Paris from 30th June - 21 July 2006.

To enter is free, but you must be a current student member of Engineers Australia, studying in your FINAL YEAR in any engineering program at an Australian University, and have a current grade point average equivalent to a Credit Grade (usually 65%), or higher (in many universities this will mean that the student is in the Honours stream).

Engineers Media - Influential Engineers (Due: 10th March, 06)

Top 100 Engineers

Engineers Media is compiling its 2006 list of Australia's most 100 influential engineers. Nominations are invited from industry, consulting, academia and other areas of engineering, as well as those engineers who hold positions of influence outside engineering.

Top 10 Young Engineers

Engineers Media also looking for the top 10 young engineers, up to the age of 35 (inclusive). While they are unlikely to be in similarly influential positions as their more senior counterparts, we seek engineers who have already made a mark in their field of activity.

Nominations for both categories should include a brief description of the nominee's area of influence and sent to dgeorg@engineersmedia.com.au

Prime Minister's Science Prizes (Due: 19th May, 06)

The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) is seeking nominations for the 2006 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science, Australia’s most prestigious science awards.

  • Prime Minister's Prize for Science ($300,000)
  • Science Minister's Prize for Life Scientist of the Year ($50,000)
  • Malcolm Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year ($50,000)
